Mighty Sparrow picks up Bollywood Music Award

King of Calypso Slinger Francisco (Mighty Sparrow) has sung his way into the hearts of the South Asian and Bollywood music lovers in the United States and the Caribbean so much so that he has been chosen as this year’s honoree along with a top Indian artist for the Bollywood Music Award.

It is very unique for a non-indian to be given such an award since the Bollywood Music Awards were instituted with a vision that the people of Indian origin living in North America and the Caribbean retain a warm and vibrant link with their motherland through the medium of movies and music.

Rajiv Dandona, executive vice president of the Bollywood Group of Companies, said that this event envisages building a further bridge for cultural exchange to eliminate the geographical barriers and boundaries via media, events and entertainment.

Sparrow received the Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Global Music.

Birdie, as he is called, has been calypso king of T&T on numerous occasions, but no longer competes in Carnival celebrations in T&T.

He, however, makes guest appearances and has been entertaining thousands worldwide.

He was awarded a honorary doctorate by the University of the West Indies for his sterling contribution in the field of music and the Grenada-born Trinidadian was given citizenship of a few Caribbean islands including St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Bollywood Music Awards 2006 takes place on November 4, at the Mark G Etess arena in the Trump Tajmahal Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will feature performances of one or two top singers, as well as 15 leading playback singers from India, Pakistan, Caribbean, Bangladesh and the United States.

Sparrow’s song and music along with top indian singers will be the main attraction. The Sona Family, Soca and Chutney superstar Tery Gajraj, of Guyana, and Music Makers band of the upcoming movie, Rainbow Rani will also be featured.
